Most visited city portal of Mysuru.
Mysore is a southern city in the state of Karnataka, India. Closely located to the state capital Bangalore, it is the second largest city of the state. Spread out from the base of the Chamundi Hills located here, Mahishuru (home of Mahisha, a Hindu mythology demon) eventually became Mysore.
Owing to a rich history of art and culture that dates back to centuries, Mysore is also known as the 'Cultural Capital of Karnataka'. The Wodeyar dynasty and Tippu Sultan have been the most celebrated rulers of the Kingdom of Mysore. It was under the reign of the Wodeyars, that Mysore developed as a well planned city. The breathtaking palaces, the beautiful water bodies, gardens, public buildings, market places etc stand proof for such a planned development. Only deservedly, Mysore was recently rated as the second cleanest city in India.
Mysore is popular all over the world, mostly because of the Dasara festivities that take place here every year. The most famous part of Mysore Dasara, now a 400 plus years long tradition, is the 'Jumboo Savari' or the Mysore Dasara Procession. Apart from Dasara, Mysore is also famous for Mysore Silk, Mysore Pak (sweet dish), Mysore style of painting, Mysore Mallige (Jasmine flower), Mysore Sandalwood Oil and Soaps, Mysore Peta (traditional turban), Mysore betel leaf etc.
Mysore's ambassador to the world, the iconic Mysore Palace – Amba Vilas, along with Jaganmohan Palace, Lalith Mahal Palace and more such beautiful palatial mansions, have given Mysore the name – 'The City of Palaces'. Chamundi Hills, Mysore Zoo, St. Philomena's Church, Krishnarajasagar Dam and Brindavan Gardens, Ranganathittu bird sanctuary, Bandipur and Nagarhole wildlife sanctuaries are just some of the other major tourist attractions in and around Mysore.
