The KRS dam – Krishna Raja Sagar dam named after the King is one of the most popular dams in the south of India. Built over the river Kaveri, the dam is revered for its water supply to a major part of the south of Karnataka.

Built under the reign of the King, the dam is the brainchild of the engineer Sir. M. Vishveswariah, who is popularly referred to as one of "The makers of modern India" and also "The father of planning in India". He is known for his unique and patented automatic weir water floodgates used for the KRS dam. The dam has the capacity to hold up to 49 billion ft of water and this is used mainly for irrigation and drinking purposes.

The place is also known for the beautiful gardens which adorn the dam and are spread over a wide expanse of 150 acres. The gardens were pioneered as a design by Sir Mirza Ismail a Diwan in Mysore at that time. The beauty of the gardens has attracted a whole host of film makers and a lot of Bollywood songs have been shot in this location dating to the time of ‘Padosan’ and also a few new ones as well.

KRS dam is also famous for its fountains. There are hundreds of fountains of different shapes and sizes with colourful lamps to add to the beauty. Also famous is the musical fountain which is a major attraction in the dam. The variation in the flow and height of the fountain as per the music is a delight to watch.

Located about 19kms from the heart of Mysore, the best time to visit the gardens is after sunset. The Brindavan gardens is illuminated which adds to the beauty of the place and makes it a definite visit on an itinerary. The timings of the gardens are as mentioned below.
